Fear is one of the most basic or innate emotions. Fear is not a physical state such as pain, but rather a psychological state of the mind, which relates to perceived events or worsening future situations. Fear ties closely into the emotional state of anxiety, however is separated in the sense that a state of anxiety need not be induced by an external force. Fear is almost always induced by an external threat. Fear can be controlled and directed, it can be used to manipulate and control, and it can be used to maintain order or induce chaos. It is one of the most basic, yet complex emotional states of the human psyche.
Fear in art can be depicted in a number of different ways. It can be a personal expression of the artist or the subject matter that they are attempting to relay to the viewer. On the other hand, the viewer can also be the target of fear; the artist can attempt to instill a sense of fear to the viewer.
